Gerald Pollack received his PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. He then joined the University of Washington faculty and is now professor of Bioengineering. He is also Founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal, WATER, convener of the Annual Conference on the Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Water, and Executive Director of the Institute for Venture Science.
When computer scientists at Microsoft started to experiment with a new artificial intelligence system last year, they asked it to solve a puzzle that should have required an intuitive understanding of the physical world. The ingenuity of the A.I. system’s answer made the researchers wonder whether they were witnessing a new kind of intelligence. In March, they published a 155-page research paper arguing that the system was a step toward artificial general intelligence, or A.G.I., which is shorthand for a machine that can do anything the human brain can do. The paper was published on an internet research repository.
Microsoft, the first major tech company to release a paper making such a bold claim, stirred one of the tech world’s testiest debates: Is the industry building something akin to human intelligence? Or are some of the industry’s brightest minds letting their imaginations get the best of them? Microsoft’s research paper, provocatively called “Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence,” goes to the heart of what technologists have been working toward — and fearing — for decades. If they build a machine that works like the human brain or even better, it could change the world. But it could also be dangerous. Or it could be nonsense. (Paywall waived.)
At the corporate level, Apple has restricted the use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot. Same with Samsung and Verizon in the tech world and a who’s who of banks (Bank of America, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Goldman, Wells Fargo, and JPMorgan). This is because of the possibility of confidential data escaping; in any event, ChatGPT’s privacy policy explicitly says your prompts can be used to train its models unless you opt out.
The fear of leaks isn’t unfounded: in March, a bug in ChatGPT revealed data from other users. One of the obvious uses for this technology is customer service, a place companies try to minimize costs. But for customer service to work, customers have to give up their details — sometimes private, sometimes sensitive. How do companies plan to secure their customer service bots? This isn’t just a problem for customer service. Let’s say Disney has decided to let AI — instead of VFX departments — write its Marvel movies. Is there a world where Disney would want to let Marvel spoilers leak? One of the expenses that comes with doing AI is compute. Building out your own data center is expensive, but using cloud compute means your queries are getting processed on a remote server, where you are essentially relying on someone else to secure your data. You can see why the banks might be fearful here — financial data is incredibly sensitive.
A key committee of lawmakers in the European Parliament have approved a first-of-its-kind artificial intelligence regulation — making it closer to becoming law. The approval marks a landmark development in the race among authorities to get a handle on AI, which is evolving with breakneck speed. The law, known as the European AI Act, is the first law for AI systems in the West. China has already developed draft rules designed to manage how companies develop generative AI products like ChatGPT. The law takes a risk-based approach to regulating AI, where the obligations for a system are proportionate to the level of risk that it poses. The AI Act categorizes applications of AI into four levels of risk: unacceptable risk, high risk, limited risk and minimal or no risk. Unacceptable risk applications are banned by default and cannot be deployed in the bloc.
“The providers of such AI models would be required to take measures to assess and mitigate risks to fundamental rights, health and safety and the environment, democracy and rule of law,” said Ceyhun Pehlivan, counsel at Linklaters and co-lead of the law firm’s telecommunications, media and technology and IP practice group in Madrid. “They would also be subject to data governance requirements, such as examining the suitability of the data sources and possible biases.” However, it’s important to note that, while the law has been passed by lawmakers in the European Parliament, it’s ways away from becoming law.
No one yet knows how ChatGPT and its artificial intelligence cousins will transform the world, and one reason is that no one really knows what goes on inside them. Some of these systems’ abilities go far beyond what they were trained to do—and even their inventors are baffled as to why. A growing number of tests suggest these AI systems develop internal models of the real world, much as our own brain does, though the machines’ technique is different. At a conference at New York University in March, philosopher Raphaël Millière of Columbia University offered yet another jaw-dropping example of what LLMs can do. The models had already demonstrated the ability to write computer code, which is impressive but not too surprising because there is so much code out there on the Internet to mimic. Millière went a step further and showed that GPT can execute code, too, however. In a tacit acknowledgement that GPT on its own should not be able to run code, its inventor, the tech company OpenAI, has since introduced a specialized plug-in—a tool ChatGPT can use when answering a query—that allows it to do so. But that plug-in was not used in Millière’s demonstration. Instead he hypothesizes that the machine improvised a memory by harnessing its mechanisms for interpreting words according to their context—a situation similar to how nature repurposes existing capacities for new functions.
In addition to extracting the underlying meaning of language, LLMs are able to learn on the fly. In the AI field, the term “learning” is usually reserved for the computationally intensive process in which developers expose the neural network to gigabytes of data and tweak its internal connections. By the time you type a query into ChatGPT, the network should be fixed; unlike humans, it should not continue to learn. So it came as a surprise that LLMs do, in fact, learn from their users’ prompts—an ability known as “in-context learning.” “It’s a different sort of learning that wasn’t really understood to exist before,” says Ben Goertzel, founder of the AI company SingularityNET.
Among other things, the public has been assured that the Covid-19 mRNA injections won’t change your DNA. However that assurance discounted the possible routes for mRNA to convert to DNA (including a process known as reverse transcription) until the publication of a paper in 2022 byAlden et al, of an in vitro study involving human liver cells which showed Pfizer’s mRNA was expressed as DNA within six hours. Going further, some research by Kevin McKernan, a scientist with 25 years experience in the genomic field and an expert in sequencing methods for DNA and RNA suggests something far more significant. He has worked on the Human Genome Project and more recently in medicinal genomics involving DNA sequencing. In the process of trying to sort out a sequencing problem, McKernan used anonymously sent, Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 bivalent vaccines to act as mRNA controls. But what he discovered in the process of using them is that they weren’t pure mRNA. They actually had a lot of DNA in the background – DNA encoding the spike gene and potentially capable of inserting into the genome of an organism.
The question is, does this DNA have the potential to become part of the genome of a human organism and if so what might be the consequences? This would have required looking at ‘genotoxicity,’ something Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the Australian government agency equivalent to the US FDA, says the (Pfizer) injections were not tested for, and the TGA did not ask for. There are strict guidelines about DNA contamination levels in mRNA products. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and FDA stated limits are 330 nanograms of DNA per milligram of RNA. In Australia, the TGA says it should be no more than 10 nanograms per dose. This means that DNA should not be more than 0.033% of the total nucleic acids in the dose. But McKernan’s analysis demonstrated DNA contamination of up to 35% in the bivalent injection samples. These results are in the process of being further verified by the scientific community. If McKernan’s findings are verified, the implications are serious. Widespread DNA contamination would bring into question the quality of the entire mRNA injection manufacturing process, safety systems, and regulatory oversight. In addition, DNA might not be the only contaminant.
Primary care providers across the U.S. were bribed with incentive programs to coerce patients into getting the toxic COVID shot. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield paid doctors $50 for each Medicaid patient aged 6 months and older, who got the experimental jab. Doctors have been financially incentivized to vaccinate children for a long time. In 2016, Blue Cross Blue Shield paid pediatricians a $400 bonus for each patient that completed 10 vaccinations before their second birthday, provided 63% of their patients were fully vaccinated.
“Client and family incentives” also exist. In 2015, the Community Preventive Services Task Force recommended boosting vaccination rates by giving small, inexpensive incentive rewards to patients. Bribery is also par for the course when it comes to vaccine mandates. Pfizer paid undisclosed sums to front groups that advocated for COVID jab mandates, thereby hiding their conflict of interest. While the COVID-19 pandemic furthered many globalist goals, it inadvertently tanked childhood vaccination rates. To get childhood vaccination rates back on track, a global alliance has launched “The Big Catch-Up” initiative. It’s touted as the largest childhood immunization effort ever.
For people who tend to think that evolution involves adding ever-greater complexity to organisms, it’s tempting to imagine that the animal family tree came about by progressively adding more stuff, like nerve cells and muscles. But there has been a steady flow of genetic studies that hint that there are two separate lineages that ended up with nerve cells. The results of these studies were a bit dependent upon the genes and species chosen for the analysis. But a new study that’s not as dependent upon individual genes now firmly places sponges as more closely related to humans than some other animals with a nervous system. Most of the early studies in this area involved identifying related genes that are present in all animals and figuring out how those genes are related. Presumably, the organisms themselves are related in the same way. That can be very informative in many situations, but the analysis tends to get confused when lots of species branch off in a short amount of time, or when individual genes change a lot due to evolutionary pressures. So, the exact answer you get can sometimes depend on what genes you choose to look at.
The new study tries to avoid the confusion by looking at how genes are arranged on chromosomes. It turns out that individual genes tend to stay in the same place on a chromosome for long periods of time; it’s estimated that it takes 40 million years for just one percent of the genes in a typical animal genome to move to a new chromosome. So the odds are that if four genes are next to each other now, then they were next to each other in the ancestors of today’s mammals that had to avoid being eaten by dinosaurs. Article carefully details the research process and notes that this means, for example, that animals like us vertebrates, along with everything else that has a left and right side, are more closely related to sponges than we are to comb jellies. That’s despite the fact that sponges have no muscles or nervous system, while comb jellies share both of them with us. How is that possibly right? The article goes on to explain.
Most people are familiar with A, B, and O blood type groups, but there are actually dozens of others — and scientists recently discovered a new one, dubbed Er. It’s the 44th known blood type group and doctors hope it could help spot and treat blood incompatibility as well as some rare diseases, particularly in fetuses and newborns. Researchers first saw hints of the Er blood type in 1982, but due to the technology at the time, they weren’t able to explore it. Four decades later, it has been fully “elucidated” in a study out of the U.K. All blood types are “determined by the presence or absence of proteins known as blood groups that are present on the surface of red blood cells.” Using “cutting-edge DNA sequencing and gene-editing techniques,” researchers from the University of Bristol, along with colleagues from NHS Blood and Transplant, identified a protein called Piezo1 as the marker for the Er blood type. Piezo1 itself was already known, and plays “important roles in both health and disease.”
Co-author Dr. Tim Satchwell, a senior research associate at the university’s school of biochemistry, called the study “a great example of how new technologies can combine with more traditional approaches to address long-standing questions that would have been impossible to answer not that many years ago.” A press release from the University of Bristol has more technical details.
It has been clear for decades that fragments of our DNA cover the planet like litter. It just didn’t seem to matter. Scientists believed DNA in the environment was too small and too degraded to be meaningfully recovered, much less used to identify an individual human being, unless it came from distinct samples like a bloodstain or an object someone had touched. Wildlife researchers embraced environmental DNA anyway because they’re only looking for very small segments of DNA — scanning for what they call bar codes that will identify the creatures in a sample to a species level. But after finding “surprising” levels of human eDNA in their samples while monitoring disease in Florida sea turtles, Dr. Duffy and his team set out to get a more accurate picture of the condition of human DNA in the environment, and to see how much information it could reveal about people in an area. As a proof of concept in one of their experiments, the researchers scooped up a soda-can-size sample of water from a creek in St. Augustine, Fla. They then fed the genetic material from the sample through a nanopore sequencer, which allows researchers to read longer stretches of DNA. The one they used cost about $1000, is the size of a cigarette lighter and plugs into a laptop like a flash drive.The researchers recovered enough mitochondrial DNA — passed directly from mother to child for thousands of generations — to generate a snapshot of the genetic ancestry of the population around the creek, which roughly aligns with the racial makeup reported in the latest census data for the area (although the researchers note that racial identity is a poor proxy for genetic ancestry). One mitochondrial sample was even complete enough to meet the requirements for the federal missing persons database.
But what if someone set out to collect human eDNA on purpose? New DNA collecting techniques are “like catnip” for law enforcement officials, says Erin Murphy, a law professor at the New York University School of Law who specializes in the use of new technologies in the criminal legal system. The police have been quick to embrace unproven tools, like using DNA to create probability-based sketches of a suspect. That could pose dilemmas for the preservation of privacy and civil liberties, especially as technological advancement allows more information to be gathered from ever smaller eDNA samples. Dr. Duffy and his colleagues used a readily available and affordable technology to see how much information they could glean from human DNA gathered from the environment in a variety of circumstances, such as from outdoor waterways and the air inside a building. The results of their research, published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, demonstrate that scientists can recover medical and ancestry information from minute fragments of human DNA lingering in the environment. That highlights the possibility that law enforcement officials could use eDNA collected at crime scenes to incriminate people, even though wildlife ecologists who developed the techniques say the science isn’t mature enough for such purposes. Scientists have yet to pin down the fundamentals of eDNA, like how it travels through air or water or how it degrades over time. (Paywall waived.)
A man who was paralyzed in a cycling accident in 2011 has been able to stand and walk with an aid after doctors implanted a device that reads his brain waves and sends instructions to his spine to move the right muscles. The “digital bridge” is the latest from a team of neuroscientists in Switzerland who have a longstanding program to develop brain-machine interfaces to overcome paralysis. The project aims to use wireless signals to reconnect the brain with muscles that are rendered useless when spinal cord nerves are broken. For the latest iteration of the device, Prof. Jocelyne Bloch, a neurosurgeon at Lausanne University hospital, installed electrodes on a person’s brain that detect neural activity when he tries to move his legs. The readings are processed by an algorithm that turns them into pulses, which are sent to further electrodes in his spine. The pulses activate nerves in the spine, switching on muscles to produce the intended movement. The device does not produce swift, smooth strides, but the implant allowed for more natural movements than before, because standing up and walking were initiated and controlled by thinking about the actions. The signals stimulate muscles needed to flex the hip, knee and ankle.
The device also appears to boost rehabilitation. After more than 40 training sessions with the implant, a recipient, who did not sever all the nerves in his spine, regained some control over his legs, even when the device was turned off. Prof. Grégoire Courtine at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne believes that reconnecting the brain and spine helps to regenerate spinal nerves, recovering some of the patient’s lost control. While the work is at an early stage, the researchers hope that future, miniaturized devices will help stroke patients and paralyzed people to walk, move their arms and hands, and control other functions, such as the bladder, which is often affected by spinal cord injuries.
Neuralink, the neurotech startup co-founded by Elon Musk, announced it has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to conduct its first in-human clinical study. Neuralink is building a brain implant called the Link, which aims to help patients with severe paralysis control external technologies using only neural signals. This means patients with severe degenerative diseases like ALS could eventually regain their ability to communicate with loved ones by moving cursors and typing with their minds. Patient recruitment for its clinical trial is not open yet. Neuralink is part of the emerging brain-computer interface, or BCI, industry. A BCI is a system that deciphers brain signals and translates them into commands for external technologies.
Scientists have been studying BCI technology for decades, and several companies have developed promising systems that they hope to bring to market. But receiving FDA approval for a commercial medical device requires companies to successfully conduct several extremely thorough rounds of testing and data safety collection. No BCI company has managed to clinch the FDA’s final seal of approval. In March, the FDA rejected an earlier Neuralink application for human trials, and reportedly outlined “dozens” of issues the company needed to address. Neuralink’s BCI will require patients to undergo invasive brain surgery. Its system centers around the Link, a small circular implant that processes and translates neural signals. The Link is connected to a series of thin, flexible threads inserted directly into the brain tissue where they detect neural signals. Patients with Neuralink devices will learn to control it using the Neuralink app. Patients will then be able to control external mice and keyboards through a Bluetooth connection, according to the company’s website.

As such, it is highly unlikely that we, as a species, are having a massive negative impact on the stability of the earth’s climate. This article lists 15 reasons that prove global warming might be a hoax. Specifically, the current warnings of a temperature increase of 0.6 degrees to 0.8 degrees are nothing irregular and fit into the natural rate of the warming recorded over the last few centuries. The placement of these global weather stations should be taken into account. They are mostly based in so-called heat islands in cities where temperatures are normally higher, and few have been placed in rural countryside locations. Two teams have corrected the average temperature readings between all the stations and have reduced the reported increase in temperature by half since 1980. Up to today, there has never been any sort of significantly extreme event caused by warming.
Sightful thinks there’s a market out there for a portable computer with a 100-inch display. It’s putting the final touches on an augmented reality device called the Spacetop that will allow you to view your work on a massive virtual display wherever you happen to be. The world’s first AR laptop basically looks quite similar to the lower half of your current laptop. The device’s chassis—which measures 10.47 inches wide, 9.8 inches deep and weighs 3.3 pounds— features a keyboard, touchpad and soft cover. What separates it from other laptops are the NReal AR glasses that come tethered to the system. Slip those on and you’ll be able to view a giant floating screen right in front of you, no matter what environment you find yourself in. Sightful says the high-resolution display can span up to 100 inches, which should come in useful if you’re the type of person whose desktop is constantly littered with open windows.
As cool as the concept may be, there’s some room for improvement. At the heart of the Spacetop is Qualcom’s Snapdragon 365 mobile CPU, which is four years out of date at this point. That means Sighful’s device is about as powerful (and maybe even less so) than the smartphone in your pocket. The hardware news isn’t all bad, though. Specs like 8 GB of ram and 256 GB of storage are pretty standard among today’s laptops, while a 2560×1920 pixel webcam and fingerprint reader are features you don’t see every day. The Spacetop is expected to launch in the coming months. Sightful is now accepting early access applications for its device now through its website. It will cost $2,000 initially, which isn’t that far from the starting price of the top-of-the-line M2 MacBook Pro.
Over the past few years, major players in the wind energy sector have developed huge new turbines, with the era of “super-sized” onshore and offshore structures appearing to be just round the corner. While these massive pieces of kit are based on a familiar design that incorporates a tower, nacelle and blades, some firms are working on new ideas that, if built, would look very different indeed. Floating offshore wind turbines are different from fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines, which are rooted to the seabed. One advantage of floating turbines is that they can be installed in far deeper waters than fixed-bottom ones, and in recent years major economies like the U.S. have laid out goals to ramp up floating wind installations. Wind Catching Systems, established in 2017 and headquartered just outside the Norwegian capital of Oslo, is focused on the development of what it calls a “floating wind power plant based on a multi-turbine design.” The overarching idea behind the Windcatcher system, as it’s known, relates to maximizing “power generation from a concentrated area.” The design also incorporates an elevator-based system for installing turbines and maintenance. Illustrations (image in the article) of what the Windcatcher would look like are certainly striking, resembling a vast, water-based wall of rotating blades. Nearly any material can be used to turn the energy in air humidity into electricity, scientists found in a discovery that could lead to continuously producing clean energy with little pollution. The research, published in a paper in Advanced Materials, builds on 2020 work that first showed energy could be pulled from the moisture in the air using material harvested from bacteria. The new study shows nearly any material can be used, like wood or silicon, as long as it can be smashed into small particles and remade with microscopic pores. But there are many questions about how to scale the product. The air-powered generator, known as an “Air-gen,” would offer continuous clean electricity since it uses the energy from humidity, which is always present, rather than depending on the sun or wind. Unlike solar panels or wind turbines, which need specific environments to thrive, Air-gens could conceivably go anywhere, said Jun Yao, a professor of engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the senior author of the study.
The device, the size of a fingernail and thinner than a single hair, is dotted with tiny holes known as nanopores. The holes have a diameter smaller than 100 nanometers, or less than a thousandth of the width of a strand of human hair. The tiny holes allow the water in the air to pass through in a way that would create a charge imbalance in the upper and lower parts of the device, effectively creating a battery that runs continuously. While one prototype only produces a small amount of energy — almost enough to power a dot of light on a big screen — because of its size, Yao said Air-gens can be stacked on top of each other, potentially with spaces of air in between. Storing the electricity is a separate issue, he added. “The entire earth is covered with a thick layer of humidity,” Yao said. “It’s an enormous source of clean energy. This is just the beginning in making use of that. Once we optimize this, you can put it anywhere,” Yao said. It’s not clear how long that will take. (Paywall waived.)
Japan and JAXA, the country’s space administration, have spent decades trying to develop a way to beam solar energy from space. In 2015, the nation made a breakthrough when JAXA scientists successfully beamed 1.8 kilowatts of power, enough energy to power an electric kettle, slightly more than 50 feet to a wireless receiver. Now, a Japanese public-private partnership will attempt to beam solar energy from space as early as 2025. The project, led by Naoki Shinohara, a Kyoto University professor who has been working on space-based solar energy since 2009, will attempt to deploy a series of small satellites in orbit. Those will then try to beam the solar energy the arrays collect to ground-based receiving stations hundreds of miles away.
Using orbital solar panels and microwaves to send energy to Earth was first proposed in 1968. Since then, a few countries, including China and the US, have spent time and money pursuing the idea. The technology is appealing because orbital solar arrays represent a potentially unlimited renewable energy supply. In space, solar panels can collect energy no matter the time of day, and by using microwaves to beam the power they produce, clouds aren’t a concern either. However, even if Japan successfully deploys a set of orbital solar arrays, the tech would still be closer to science fiction than fact. That’s because producing an array that can generate 1 gigawatt of power – or about the output of one nuclear reactor – would cost about $7 billion with currently available technologies.
The U.K.’s first full-sized autonomous bus service has opened to the general public. The AB1 service, as it’s known, travels on a 14-mile route in Scotland, between the Ferrytoll Park and Ride in Fife and Edinburgh Park Transport Interchange. The service is able to carry as many as 10,000 passengers each week, according to public transport firm Stagecoach. A standard single adult ticket is roughly $9. Stagecoach noted that AB1 was “believed to be the first registered bus service in the world to use full sized autonomous buses.” The trial will run until 2025. A fleet of five buses will be involved, traveling in mixed traffic at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. The autonomous vehicles operate using a range of sensors and artificial intelligence, although a human safety driver is required at all times. Another person will collect tickets and be available to answer questions from those on board.
Recycled and reused food contact plastics are “vectors for spreading chemicals of concern” because they accumulate and release hundreds of dangerous toxins like styrene, benzene, bisphenol, heavy metals, formaldehyde and phthalates, new research finds. The study assessed hundreds of scientific publications on plastic and recycled plastic to provide a first-of-its-kind systematic review of food contact chemicals in food packaging, utensils, plates and other items and what is known about how the substances contaminate food. “Hazardous chemicals can accumulate in recycled material and then migrate into foodstuffs, leading to chronic human exposure,” the study’s authors wrote, noting bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic as a common example.
The study comes amid a debate over how to reduce the amount of plastic waste filling up the globe. The petrochemical industry, some governments and many environmental groups have pushed for improvements to the recyclability of plastic. Though some types of the material can be recycled, most cannot, and the study highlights how improving recyclability of the material comes with risks: it identified 853 chemicals used in PET recycled plastic and many of those have been discovered during the last two years. Moreover, the chemistries of plastics can be something of a black box. In the US, there’s very little regulation around what goes in the material and the EU only requires light testing to determine which chemicals are in plastic. The study characterizes plastics as “very complex materials containing hundreds of different, synthetic compounds which are more often than not poorly characterized for their hazard properties”. Some chemicals found in recycled plastics cannot be identified, the analysis notes, adding to the risk of repeatedly recycling and accumulation.
Brig Gen Jesse Morehouse at US Space Command, the arm of the military responsible for space operations, said Russian aggression and China’s vision to become the dominant space power by mid-century, had left the US with “no choice” but to prepare for orbital skirmishes. Morehouse told reporters in a briefing at the US embassy in London, “If someone was to threaten the United States of America, or any of our interests, including those of our allies and partners with whom we have treaties of mutual defense support, we are ready to fight tonight.” Satellites underpin great swathes of modern life, from banking systems to weather forecasting, and are crucial for military operations through intelligence gathering, communications, navigation and guidance. But an overreliance on satellites means that an attack on a country’s orbital assets could have far-reaching consequences.
Four countries, China, the US, India and Russia, have tested anti-satellite capabilities by destroying their own satellites with missiles from the ground. But such demonstrations, which the US unilaterally banned last year, create vast clouds of debris that put other satellites at risk for decades. Russia and China are working on spacecraft capable of anti-satellite operations. In 2020, the US accused Russia of launching a projectile from one of two satellites that were trailing a US spy satellite. Meanwhile, China has launched a satellite with a robotic arm capable of grabbing other satellites, and has developed a way to place explosives in the thruster nozzles of adversary’s satellites. The explosives are designed to go undetected for long periods and when detonated resemble an innocent engine malfunction.

The Clinton deepfake – a realistic yet fabricated video created by AI algorithms trained on copious online footage – is among thousands surfacing on social media, blurring fact and fiction in the polarized world of U.S. politics. While such synthetic media has been around for several years, it’s been turbocharged over the past year by of a slew of new “generative AI” tools such as Midjourney that make it cheap and easy to create convincing deepfakes, according to Reuters interviews with about two dozen specialists in fields including AI, online misinformation and political activism.
There have been three times as many video deepfakes of all kinds and eight times as many voice deepfakes posted online this year compared to the same time period in 2022, according to DeepMedia, a company working on tools to detect synthetic media. In total, about 500,000 video and voice deepfakes will be shared on social media sites globally in 2023, DeepMedia estimates. Cloning a voice used to cost $10,000 in server and AI-training costs up until late last year, but now startups offer it for a few dollars, it says. No one is certain where the generative AI road leads or how to effectively guard against its power for mass misinformation, according to the people interviewed.
The endless bitter antagonism to Putin and to Russia has allowed a self-imagined reality to detach, ultimately becoming a delusion. The recent G7 summit should be understood as firstly, the shaping of a battlespace in the ‘War of Narratives’ whose principal ‘front’ today is the Team Biden insistence that only one ‘reality’ — the US-led ‘Rules’ ideology (and it alone) – can predominate. And, secondly to underline pointedly that the West is ‘not losing’ in this war against the other ‘reality’. This other reality is the multivalent ‘otherness’ that self-evidently is attracting more and more support around the world.
Many in the West are simply unaware of how fast the geopolitical tectonic plates are shifting: The original plate bifurcation (the failed financial war declared on Russia), already has led to a building wave. Anger is growing. People now no longer feel alone in rejecting western hegemony – they “no longer care”. In the week that preceded the recent G7 summit, the Arab League literally ‘went multi-polar’; It quit its former pro-US automaticity. The embrace of President Assad and the Syrian government was both the logical consequence to the secondary tectonic-plate shift set in motion by China with its Saudi-Iranian diplomacy — a revolution which Mohammad bin Salman (MbS) then logically extended to the entire Arab sphere. Denial becomes endemic. So, we witness a hawkish G7, diverting from the narrative setback (of Bakhmut falling) by the embrace of a plan to supply F-16s to Ukraine; chastising China for not making President Putin ‘back off’ in Ukraine; and using the meeting to set a narrative framework for the coming confrontation with China on trade issues and Taiwan. This extensive narrative-shaping for China confrontation is seen to be necessary by the G7 as the rest of the world does not view China as a genuine threat to the US: Rather, they understand that the true threats to the US derive from its internal divisions, and not from external sources.
A dozen poor countries are facing economic instability and even collapse under the weight of hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign loans, much of them from the world’s biggest and most unforgiving government lender, China. An Associated Press analysis of a dozen countries most indebted to China — including Pakistan, Kenya, Zambia, Laos and Mongolia — found paying back that debt is consuming an ever-greater amount of the tax revenue needed to keep schools open, provide electricity and pay for food and fuel. Behind the scenes is China’s reluctance to forgive debt and its extreme secrecy about how much money it has loaned and on what terms, which has kept other major lenders from stepping in to help. On top of that is the recent discovery that borrowers have been required to put cash in hidden escrow accounts that push China to the front of the line of creditors to be paid. Which answers the obvious question: Why aren’t these countries simply telling China to take a hike? Experts predict that unless China begins to soften its stance on its loans to poor countries, there could be a wave of more defaults and political upheavals.
Countries in AP’s analysis had as much as 50% of their foreign loans from China and most were devoting more than a third of government revenue to paying off foreign debt. Two of them, Zambia and Sri Lanka, have already gone into default, unable to make even interest payments on loans financing the construction of ports, mines and power plants. In Pakistan, millions of textile workers have been laid off because the country has too much foreign debt and can’t afford to keep the electricity on and machines running. In Kenya, the government has held back paychecks to thousands of civil service workers to save cash to pay foreign loans. The president’s chief economic adviser tweeted last month, “Salaries or default? Take your pick.” Since Sri Lanka defaulted a year ago, a half-million industrial jobs have vanished, inflation has pierced 50% and more than half the population in many parts of the country has fallen into poverty. China’s unwillingness to take big losses on the hundreds of billions of dollars it is owed, as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank have urged, has left many countries on a treadmill of paying back interest, which stifles the economic growth that would help them pay off the debt. Foreign cash reserves have dropped in 10 of the dozen countries in AP’s analysis, down an average 25% in just a year. They have plunged more than 50% in Pakistan and the Republic of Congo. Without a bailout, several countries have only months left of foreign cash to pay for food, fuel and other essential imports. Mongolia has eight months left. Pakistan and Ethiopia about two. “As soon as the financing taps are turned off, the adjustment takes place right away,” said Patrick Curran, senior economist at researcher Tellimer. “The economy contracts, inflation spikes up, food and fuel become unaffordable.”
With Argentina’s supply of U.S. dollars dwindling as a result, the government in April announced it would pay for $1 billion worth of imports from China in yuan — and for $790 million worth of monthly imports thereafter. It also activated a currency swap agreement, making it possible for companies to borrow yuan from China, Argentina’s second-largest trading partner. The deal was welcome news for Beijing, which has long wanted its currency in wider use and to enjoy some of the power and prestige that the United States enjoys thanks to the dollar’s global domination. It wasn’t having much luck — until recently. Suddenly more customers are willing to settle their bills in Chinese yuan, thanks variously to domestic economic crises, Western sanctions against Russia, China’s position as a major lender and growing concerns about being beholden to Washington’s policies. Brazil’s government last month announced companies could settle their trade in yuan. In March, a French firm accepted payment in yuan for 65,000 tons of liquefied natural gas. A few weeks earlier, the yuan became the most-traded currency on the Moscow stock exchange.
None of these are signs the yuan is going to dethrone the dollar any time soon, according to economists inside and outside China. This would require more countries to pay each other in yuan for large amounts of trade that doesn’t involve China, which isn’t yet happening. The dollar’s widespread use makes it difficult to displace. Because it is widely used, it is easy to exchange, creating more incentive for countries to use it. This network effect encapsulates part of the challenge to adoption of the yuan, which is more expensive and inconvenient partly because there is less of it circulating outside China. “The dominance of the dollar makes the world heavily dependent on the United States,” said Xi Junyang, vice director of the Research Center for Modern Finance at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. “It makes the Federal Reserve the institution that determines the monetary and financial affairs of the entire world.” But the recent flurry of settlements in yuan do constitute some progress toward Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s vision: with China at the helm of a global economic order that is insulated from the fluctuations of the dollar and Western sanctions. This effort has taken on fresh urgency amid worsening tensions between Moscow and Washington, and Beijing has watched with concern as the West piles sanctions on Russian firms. (Paywall waived.)
The Supreme Court appears poised to curtail race-conscious affirmative action. Grade inflation makes it harder to pick students based on GPA, since so many have A averages. And the SAT and ACT tests, long criticized for favoring white and wealthy students, have fallen out of fashion at many universities, which have made them optional or dropped them entirely. As these differentiators recede and the number of applications soars, colleges are grappling with the latest pay-to-play maneuver that gives the rich an edge: published research papers. A new industry is extracting fees from well-heeled families to enable their teenage children to conduct and publish research that colleges may regard as a credential. At least 20 online research programs for high schoolers have sprung up in the U.S. and abroad in recent years, along with a bevy of journals that publish the work. This growth was aided by the pandemic, which normalized online education and stymied opportunities for in-person research.
The consequence has been a profusion of published research papers by high school students. According to four months of reporting by ProPublica, online student journals now present work that ranges from serious inquiry by young scholars to dubious papers whose main qualification seems to be that the authors’ parents are willing to pay, directly or indirectly, to have them published. Usually, the projects are closely directed by graduate students or professors who are paid to be mentors. College admissions staff, besieged by applicants proffering links to their studies, verify that a paper was published but are often at a loss to evaluate its quality. The programs serve at least 12,000 students a year worldwide. Most families are paying between $2,500 and $10,000 to improve their odds of getting into U.S. universities that accept as few as 1 in every 25 applicants. Some of the biggest services are located in China, and international students abound even in several U.S.-based programs.
Scientists at the University of Leeds believe they could have found the answer to a long-running mystery behind Jupiter’s famous “stripes.” Pictures of the planet are characterized by bands of color, as well as the famous Great Red Spot, but these bands are often seen to move and change – something which scientists have until now not been able to explain. Now thanks to a new discovery – made possible by NASA’s Juno mission providing incredible new information about Jupiter’s magnetic field – Dr. Kumiko Hori and Professor Chris Jones from the University’s School of Maths believe they could have found the answer. Scientists already know the changing appearance of Jupiter is somehow linked to infrared variations about 50 km below the gas giant’s surface, and this fresh research has shown that these variations could in turn be caused by waves produced by the planet’s magnetic field, deep within its interior.
Using data gathered by NASA’s Juno mission to Jupiter, which has been orbiting the planet since 2016, their research team was able to monitor and calculate changes in its magnetic field. Professor Jones added: “It is possible to get wavelike motions in a planetary magnetic field which are called torsional oscillations. The exciting thing is that when we calculated the periods of these torsional oscillations, they corresponded to the periods that you see in the infrared radiation on Jupiter.” By looking at the magnetic field over several years, they have been able to track its waves and oscillations and have even been able to follow a specific spot of magnetic field on Jupiter called the Great Blue Spot. This spot has been moving eastwards, but the latest data shows that movement is slowing – leading the Juno team to believe this is the beginning of an oscillation, with the movement slowing before it reverses and starts going westwards.
India’s newfound status as the world’s most populous nation had prompted hopes of a youthful new engine for the global economy just as China’s population begins to dwindle and age. India’s working age population is young, growing, and projected to hit a billion over the next decade – a vast pool of labor and consumption. In contrast to China, where economists fear there won’t be enough workers to support the growing number of elderly, in India the concern is there aren’t enough jobs to support the growing number of workers. Some analysts have described the situation as a “time bomb”, warning of the potential for social unrest unless more employment can be created. Kaushik Basu, an economics professor at Cornell University and former chief economic adviser for the Indian government, described India’s youth unemployment rate as “shockingly high.” It’s been “climbing slowly for a long time, say for about 15 years it’s been on a slow climb but over the past seven, eight years it’s been a sharp climb,” he said.
To be clear, it’s not all doom and gloom. Economists say India has various options to address these demographic problems – among them, developing an already globally competitive and labor-intensive manufacturing sector, which accounted for less than 15% of employment in 2021, according to Capital Economics, a relatively low amount. But such fixes on the macro level will do little to help those who are struggling now. See also: 1 in 5 Young Chinese Is Jobless, and Millions More Are About to Graduate which notes that nearly 12 million Chinese expect to graduate and enter the job pool next month. The government reported this week that 20.4% of people ages 16 to 24 looking for a job were out of work in April. That is the highest level since China started announcing the statistic in 2018. High youth unemployment has been a dark stain on China’s economy for several years, exacerbated by strict pandemic health restrictions limited travel, decimated small businesses and damaged consumer confidence. The government, facing rare public discontent as young professionals in major cities across China protested the “zero COVID” rules, abruptly announced in December that it would start easing the policies. But the youth jobless rate has remained high, even as the overall rate has ticked down two months in a row. (Editor’s note: Yes, China is concerned about its long term demographic trends and not having enough people in the workforce to support the growing percentage of elderly people, but the short term demographic problem is the same as nearly everywhere: a shortage of entry level positions – read: brutally competitive market – for college educated youth.)
The Corporate Equality Index (CEI) is the reason companies are going WOKE. This is the imaginary social credit score based on a company’s adherence to WOKE policies. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), a massive international political lobbying group that dictates the CEI score, employs 39 million workers globally. George Soros and the Open Society Foundation fund the HRC directly. The 2023 Corporate Equality Index toolkit has a point system for various woke policies. The new policy has expanded these woke policies and makes it increasingly difficult for companies to operate outside of the far-left narrative. For example, spousal and partner benefits can earn a company up to 20 possible points. An employee does not need to be legally married for their partner “regardless of sex” to receive benefits, which include surrogacy benefits, expensive IVF treatments, foster care assistance, cryopreservation, and adoption assistance.
The criteria for a 100 CEI score rose dramatically in just one year. Religious organizations or employers are demonized for holding true to their values. Are we really forcing employers to pay for breast augmentations and voice therapy? The most disturbing piece is that employers must now provide “gender-affirming care” procedures to the children of their employees. If you look around, nearly every business is adhering to this agenda as the CEI social credit score has become just as important as the ESG climate social credit score.
Only a few people understand that propaganda is administered in their own nation by their own media, and understand that it’s administered across partisan lines, but they think of it in terms of really egregious lies like weapons of mass destruction in Iraq or babies being taken from incubators in Kuwait. In reality, propaganda is administered in western nations, by western nations, across the political spectrum — and the really blatant and well-known examples of its existence make up only a small sliver of the propaganda that our civilization is continuously marinating in. The most common articles of propaganda — and by far the most consequential — are not the glaring, memorable instances that live in infamy among the critically minded. They’re the mundane messages, distortions and lies-by-omission that people are fed day in and day out to normalize the status quo.
One of the forms this takes is the way the western political/media class manipulates the Overton window of acceptable political opinion. Have you ever noticed how when you look at any mainstream newspaper, broadcast or news website, you never see views from those who oppose the existence of the US-centralized empire? Or those who want to close all foreign US military bases? Or those who want to dismantle capitalism? Or those who want a thorough rollback of the creeping authoritarianism our civilization is being subjected to? You might see some quibbling about different aspects of the empire, some debate over whether we should de-escalate against Russia so we can better escalate against China, but you won’t ever see anyone calling for the complete end of the empire and its abuses altogether. That’s propaganda. It’s propaganda in multiple ways: it excludes voices that are critical of the established status quo from being heard and influencing people, it amplifies voices which support the status quo, and, most importantly, it creates the illusion that the range of political opinions presented are the only reasonable political opinions to have. (Editor’s note: We recommend this article – “propaganda” can be a lot more subtle than you might guess. Are you certain you know how much Kool-aid you’ve been drinking?)
Ten lighthouses that for generations have stood like sentinels along America’s shorelines protecting mariners from peril and guiding them to safety are being given away at no cost or sold at auction by the federal government. The aim of the program run by the General Services Administration is to preserve the properties, most of which are more than a century old. The development of modern technology, including GPS, means lighthouses are no longer essential for navigation, said John Kelly of the GSA’s office of real property disposition. The GSA has been transferring ownership of lighthouses since Congress passed the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act in 2000. About 150 lighthouses have been transferred, 80 or so given away and another 70 auctioned, raising more than $10m.
This year, six lighthouses are being offered at no cost to federal, state or local government agencies, non-profits, educational organizations or other entities that are willing to maintain and preserve them and make them publicly available for educational, recreational or cultural purposes. They include the 34ft-tall Plymouth/Gurnet Light in Massachusetts. The octagonal wooden structure dates to 1842, although a lighthouse has been at the site since 1768. A previous beacon at the site was staffed by America’s first female lighthouse keeper. Another favorite is Warwick Neck Light, in Warwick, Rhode Island. The 51ft-tall lighthouse that dates to 1827 was an important navigation tool for mariners making their way to Providence. The four lighthouses being sold at auction include Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead light, Ohio, a 50ft steel tower dating to 1911 that is only accessible by boat but has spectacular views of the city skyline, the Penfield Reef lighthouse in Fairfield, Connecticut, Stratford Shoal light in the middle of Long Island Sound between New York and Connecticut, and Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance light in Chassell, Michigan.

Dr. Todd Ovokaitys
After two years at Northwestern, he was accepted into an accelerated combined graduate/undergraduate program at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, which conferred both B.A. and M.D. degrees. During a meditation class in the summer of 1989, Dr. Todd paired with another student for an exercise. Most significantly, if it were possible to determine and transmit the correct resonant signals, that it was possible to switch the activity of a sick cell to that of a healthy cell, an old cell to that of a young cell.
