We are The Arlington Institute, a nonprofit organization based in West Virginia, United States. The Arlington Institute is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt nonprofit under U.S. Code Title 26 § 1.501(c)(3)-1.

What data we collect

When you use our services, such as signing up for Premium Membership, registering for our email list, making a purchase through our online shop, or leaving a review or comment, we collect certain information about you to fulfill your request and prevent spam. Who we share your data with

In some cases, we are unable to fulfill your request on our own. When this occurs, we share only the information necessary to complete your request. Below is a summary of what information we share and with whom.

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

When you sign up for a membership, join our email list, or make a purchase through our shop, we share certain information with Google for spam protection through its reCAPTCHA service. This information may include your IP address, browser user agent string, and cookies used by Google for the reCAPTCHA. When you create an account, we share an anonymized string (also known as a hash) generated from your email address with Gravatar to determine whether you use their service. Gravatar is used to provide profile pictures. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/

When you purchase a membership or make a store purchase, your payment details are shared with Stripe for payment processing. Your financial information is stored and processed in accordance with Stripe’s privacy policy which can be found here: https://stripe.com/privacy

If you choose to pay via PayPal, your payment details are shared with PayPal for processing. Your financial information is stored and processed according to PayPal’s privacy policy which can be found here: https://www.paypal.com/us/legalhub/privacy-full

When you make a store purchase, your shipping address is shared with Printify to fulfill your order. Printify will share your shipping address with its printing and delivery partners as necessary to complete your purchase. How long we store your data

If you leave a comment or submit a review, the content and its associated metadata are retained indefinitely. This allows us to recognize and automatically approve any follow-up comments instead of placing them in a moderation queue.

If you register on our website, we store the personal information you provide in your user profile. You may view, edit, or delete your personal information at any time, except for your username, which cannot be changed. Website administrators also have access to and may edit this information.

You also have the right to access your personal data and request its deletion. Please see the section below for more information about these rights.

Reviews and comments

When you submit a review or comment on our site, we collect the information provided in the comment or review form, along with your IP address and browser user agent string, to help detect and prevent spam.

Media

If you upload images to our website, please avoid including embedded location data (such as EXIF GPS data). Visitors to the site may be able to download images and extract any location information they contain.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site, you may choose to save your name, email address, and website in cookies. These cookies are provided for your convenience so you do not have to re-enter your details when leaving another comment. The cookies will remain active for one year.

When you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

Upon logging in, we also set additional cookies to store your login information and screen display preferences. Login cookies remain active for two days, while screen preference cookies last for one year. If you select “Remember Me,” your login will remain active for two weeks. Logging out of your account will remove the login cookies.

Right to access, right to be forgotten, and right to correct

If you have an account on this site or have submitted comments or reviews, you may request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any information you have provided to us. To process such a request, we will require verification that you are the account holder or a verified and authorized designee of the account holder.

If you have an account, you may also request that we delete the personal data we hold about you. We will make every effort to fulfill verified requests within 30 days. Again, we will require verification that you are the account holder or a verified and authorized designee of the account holder. Please note that we cannot delete any data we are legally required to retain. Such information will be deleted once we are no longer obligated to keep it.

You may also request that we correct any inaccurate or incomplete personal data we maintain about you. We will make every effort to fulfill verified requests within 30 days. We will require verification that you are the account holder or a verified and authorized designee of the account holder.

California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) Rights

The California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA) gives consumers greater control over the personal information businesses collect about them. CCPA regulations provide guidance on how businesses must implement the law. This law gives California consumers the following privacy rights, including:

  • The right to know about the personal information a business collects about them and how it is used and shared;
  • The right to delete personal information collected from them (with some exceptions);
  • The right to opt-out of the sale or sharing of their personal information including via the GPC;

  • The right to limit the use and disclosure of sensitive personal information collected about them.
